JLPT N5 Grammar: が (ga)

Meaning: subject marker

Explain:
「が」is a serial particle and means “but”. When using 「が」 to join two sentences (clauses), we get one sentence.
When you want to describe a natural phenomenon, use 「が」 before the subject.

For example:

1. あなたがピアノを弾けるとは知りませんでした。
anata ga piano o hikeru to wa shirimasen deshita.
I didn’t know you could play the piano.

2. 推定で１０％のイギリス人が、アイルランド人の血筋を引いています。
suitei de juppaasento no igirisujin ga, airurandojin no chisuji o hiite imasu.
An estimated 10 percent of Brits have Irish heritage.

3. 紙を走るペンの音がやんだ。
kami o hashiru pen no oto ga yanda.
The pen ceased to move over the paper.

4. 非常階段があるな。これは便利だ。
hijou kaidan ga aru na. kore wa benri da.
Here is an emergency staircase. That is convenient.
