How to Say Goodbye in Japanese

Saying goodbye in Japanese isn’t just about “Sayounara”! Depending on the situation, different phrases are used. Let’s go through some common ones!

1. さようなら (Sayounara) – Formal & long-term goodbye
This is a serious goodbye, used when you won’t see someone for a long time, like moving away or leaving a job. It’s not something people say every day.

2. じゃあね (Jaa ne) – Casual & friendly
This is a relaxed way to say “See you!” to friends. You can also say またね (Mata ne), which means “See you later!”

3. バイバイ (Bai bai) – Simple & playful
This comes from English and is mostly used by kids or among close friends. It’s a fun and easy way to say goodbye.

4. お疲れ様です (Otsukaresama desu) – Work goodbye
If you’re leaving work or finishing a task with colleagues, this phrase acknowledges everyone’s hard work while also meaning “Goodbye.”

5. いってきます (Ittekimasu) & いってらっしゃい (Itterasshai) – When leaving home
Ittekimasu = Said by the person leaving (like “I’m off!”)
Itterasshai = Said by the person staying (like “Take care!”)

6. 失礼します (Shitsurei shimasu) – Polite goodbye
Used in formal settings, such as leaving a meeting or office. It’s a polite way to excuse yourself when saying goodbye.
