The difference between ここ, そこ and あそこ ịn Japanese
🟢 ここ (koko) – Here
Near the speaker.
Like これ (this).
Example:
ここにいます。
Koko ni imasu.
→ I am here.
🟡 そこ (soko) – There
Near the listener.
Like それ (that near you).
Example:
そこに本があります。
Soko ni hon ga arimasu.
→ There is a book there (near you).
🔴 あそこ (asoko) – Over there
Far from both speaker and listener.
Like あれ (that over there).
Example:
あそこにレストランがあります。
Asoko ni resutoran ga arimasu.
→ There is a restaurant over there.
❓ どこ (doko) – Where?
Used to ask about a location.
Example:
駅はどこですか。
Eki wa doko desu ka?
→ Where is the station?
👉 Quick rule:
ここ = here (near me)
そこ = there (near you)
あそこ = over there (far from both)
どこ = where?
