How to use: Vる + まい

* group verbs II and group III can quit る

Meaning 1: Won’t do ~ (expressing negative, used in writing). The main subject is the first person

Example sentences:

人の忠告を聞こうとしない彼には、もう何も言うまい。
I will not say a word to a man who refuses to listen to people’s advice like him.

もう甘いものは食べまいと思っても、ついつい食べてしまう。
I was planning to stop eating sweets in the future, but I accidentally ate it.

一気飲みなどというばかなことは二度とす（／する）まい。
I’ll never do that kind of stupid thing like drinking all my drinks in one go.

彼女は涙を見せまいとして横を向いた。
She turned her face to the side so as not to let anyone see her crying.

Meaning 2: Probably not ~ (negative prediction, used in writing). The main subject is the 3rd person

Example sentences:

彼はきのうとても具合が悪そうだったから、今日のスポーツ大会には来るまい。
He looked very ill yesterday, so he probably won’t go to the sports festival today.

この程度の雨なら、川が氾濫する恐れはあるまい。
If it rains like this, there is no danger of overflowing the banks.

親は知るまいが、私は高校時代よくたばこを吸って先生に怒られたものだ。
I guess my parents didn’t know that when I was in high school I used to smoke and my teacher scolded me.

私はもうそれほど長くは生きられまい。
I probably won’t live that long.

飢えとはどんなものか、今の日本の子どもたちには理解できないのではあるまいか。（＝～ではないだろうか）（→N1）
