JLPT N5 Grammar: たい (tai)

Meaning: want to do something

How to use: Verb-ますstem + たい

Explain:
You use たい to express a desire to do something. The direct object can be marked either by が or を.

For example:
1. 日本へ行きたいです。
Nihon e ikitaidesu.
I want to go to Japan

2. 寿司を食べたいです。
Sushi o tabetaidesu.
I want to eat sushi

3. 歯が痛いですから、何も食べたくないです。
Hagaitaidesukara, nani mo tabetakunaidesu.
Because of toothache, I don’t want to eat anything

4. 私は他人から好かれたい。
watashi wa tanin kara sukaretai.
I want to be loved by others.

5. 人は理解されたい。
hito wa rikai saretai.
People want to be understood.

Attention:
The sentence pattern 「たいです」 cannot be used to express the desire of a third person.

For example: in case you want to invite the listener to drink coffee, don’t say [ｺｰﾋｰが飲みたいですか?] but 「ｺｰﾋｰが飲みませんか?」
