JLPT N3 Grammar: がち (gachi)

Meaning: tend to; often

Explain: Used to express meaning tends, often happens…and the presentation often tends not to be good.

How to use:
Noun + がち
Verb ます (stem form) + がち

For example:
1. その作家は、ここ数年病気がちでなかなかまとまった仕事ができないと言っている。
sono sakka wa, koko sū-nen byōki-gachide nakanaka matomatta shigoto ga dekinai to itte iru.
The writer says that he has been sick for the past few years and has been unable to do a well-organized work.

2. このところ、はっきりしない雲りがちの天気が続いているので、洗濯ものが干せなくて困る。
kono tokoro, hakkiri shinai kumori-gachi no tenki ga tsudzuite irunode, sentaku mono ga hosenakute komaru.
These days, the weather is unusual, or it’s cloudy for a long time, so washing clothes won’t dry, it’s really annoying

3. 甘い物はついつい食べ過ぎてしまいがちなので、ダイエット中は気をつけましょう
amai mono wa tsuitsui tabe sugite shimai-gachinanode, daietto-chū wa ki o tsukemashou
Sweets are often accidentally eaten too much, so while dieting we have to be careful

4. 私たちは緊急なものに対しては、すぐ反応しがちだ。
watashitachi wa kinkyuu na mono ni tai shite wa, sugu hannou shi gachi da.
We tend to react to urgent matters.

5. 多くの人が運動する時間がないと考えがちだ。
ooku no hito ga undou suru jikan ga nai to kangae gachi da.
Most of us think we don’t have enough time to exercise.
