JLPT N3 Grammar: ほど (hodo)

Meaning: to the extent that; so much… that

Explain: With the form of 「AほどBだ」, this sentence pattern expresses the idea that “As the level of A increases, the level of B also increases”.

How to use:
Verb-casual, non-past + ほど
なadj + なほど/であるほど
Noun + ほど
いadj + ほど

For example:
1. この商品は面白いほでおよく売れる。
kono shōhin wa omoshiroi hode o yokuureru.
This product is interesting and sells well.

2. 顔も見たくないほど嫌いだ。
kao mo mitakunai hodo kiraida.
I hate him so much that I don’t even want to see his face.

3. コンサートはたいへんなにんきで、立ち見がでるほどだった。
konsāto wa taihen’na ninki de, tachimi ga deru hododatta.
The concert was so crowded that even people stood listening

4. なんの連絡もしてこないから、どれほど心配したかわからない。
nan no renraku mo shite konaikara, dorehodo shinpai shita ka wakaranai.
I haven’t heard back from you, so I don’t know how worried you were.

5. わたしは、絶望に近いほど暗い気分に落ち込んだ。
watashi wa, zetsubou ni chikai hodo kurai kibun ni ochikonda.
I felt a dismay so great it was almost despair.

6. クラスは思ってもなかったほどの大成功をおさめた。
kurasu wa omotte mo nakatta hodo no daiseikou o osameta.
The classes were succeeding far beyond my hopes.
